DAY TOUR: Pech Merle cave & St Cirq Lapopie
This tour will allow you to discover the province of Quercy. The day begins with a visit of the fascinating Perch Merle cave. Here you will see some of humanity’s earliest artistic expressions, with remarkably well-preserved cave paintings dating from more than 20,000 years ago. Gravettian (25,000 B.C.) as well as Magdalenian (16,000 B.C.) murals and engravings decorate more than 2km of cave walls. Seven of the chambers display remarkably lifelike images of woolly mammoths, spotted horses, unspotted horses, cows, reindeer, humans as well as very clear hand prints. Footprints of children, preserved in what was once clay, have been found more than half a mile underground.
It is not only the prehistoric art that attracts visitors. Geologists also visit the cave in order to observe the stages of its several-million year geological formation. It is visibly possible to define all the periods of flooding, where water hollowed out caves, as well as witness various crystalline formations, truly a remarkable demonstration of geographical history.
After the visit of the cave, we depart for the wonderful village of St Cirq Lapopie, voted France’s most beautiful village. The location of the village was originally selected due to the defensive qualities of the position. It sits on the cliff face 100ms above the River Lot. This unique defensive positioning has helped the village fight off attacks and is possibly the most well-preserved village in the region, an open air museum. The village became extremely popular with artists after it inspired Post-Impressionist Henri Martin to create numerous paintings of the village. St Cirq Lapopie is also the home of the writer André Breton.
The tour ends with a stop in Cahors in order to admire the fortified Valentré Bridge, the last remaining medieval fortified bridge in Europe. Construction began in 1308 and it took 70 years before final completion. Restored in 1879, the 138m bridge is characterised by six gothic arches as well as three 40m high square bridge towers and is one of the most famous landmarks of the region.
