Wildlife

Thanks to its variety of landscapes, Burgundy permits us to discover and observe a rich and wide wildlife. 1500 plant species are listed in the region, some of them are characteristic of certain landscapes. Around 400 animal species are also protected.

In the bocage landscape in the Southern part of the region, a lot of insects, birds (buzzards, magpies…), foxes, and shrews find a welcoming place to live. During the night it is possible to observe lot of bats eating mosquitos and butterflies.

In the agricultural area (60 per cent of the region), it is still possible to observe hares, larks, thrushes and Montagu’s harriers even if they are suffering of the agricultural mechanization.

30 per cent of the region is covered by forests (oaks, beeches, and spruces). If it is quite exceptional to meet deer and hinds, it is very easy to observe roe deer, wild boars, and foxes.

The large number of rivers and lakes attract thousand migratory birds such as Eurasian curlews and grebes. Around 40 species of fishes lived in the waters of Burgundy, a testimony of their quality. These fragile and sensible spaces are very well-preserved permitting the protection of this extraordinary biodiversity.
