Sancerre / Pouilly Fumé

Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé

Today, the Sancerre region vineyard covers 2,400 hectares It extends over the medium and high portions of the slopes and especially in the area immediately surrounding the city of Sancerre. It benefits from a warm micro-climate and very stony, warm and healthy ground which encourages vine cultivation. The vine covered land may be divided into three areas. The highest slopes, located to the west, referred to as the "Terres Blanches" (white earth), represent 40% of the vineyard : clay-calcareous, it produces full-bodied wine. Located between the "Terres Blanches" and the Sancerre peak, are the "Caillotes", low, very calcareous slopes, which give light and fruity wines. They also represent 40% of the vineyard. Finally, to the east, the soils rich in flint, which give fleshy wines with a characteristic bouquet. White wines are made from the grape Sauvigon blanc. They develop floral flavors with citrus notes. They are dry but usually round and fresh. They can be drunk young but some have a long keeping potential. The rosé and red are made from Pinot noir. They have a beautiful cherry colour and their scent is floral. They are well balanced wines, with power and finess.

One of our wine makers partner in Sancerre: Established for 10 generations on the peak of Sancerre, the Fouassier family is one of the oldest wine producing families of Sancerre.

Today, the estate extends nearly 53 hectares (132.5 acres) from which 80% is of the noble and very old grape variety, called Sauvignon, and as for the rest, from the most delicate and elegant of red grape varieties, called Pinot Noir. They carry out a traditional cultivation, which combines the most ancestral methods passing by others from the biological or biodynamical culture and the most modern in terms of equipment. The key word of the property being the respect for the terroir, they do there best to respect the environment and to propose the heritage that we will pass on to the next generations.
