Discover of Mont Saint-Michel.
Normandy is known all across the world as the cradle of Impressionism. Discovering the coastline, you'll quickly understand why! The light is unique, sometimes intense, sometimes soft as it hangs on the details of a cliff or caresses the endless beaches, respectively. The colors of the English Channel add to the dramatic scenery: infinite shades of blue, grey and green! You'll want to keep your eyes open to admire the seagulls, waves and froth!
Solidly perched on a small island approximately 1 km (1/2 mile) away from the coast, Mont St-Michel is the stuff of dreams: a deep sandy bay, a medieval fortified village and a hilltop abbey. Founded in 709 A.D. by bishop Aubert to honor the Archangel Michael who protects the island from the top of the sharp steeple, discover over 1300 years of history here. The main road in the village is full of narrow half-timbered houses.
The Mont Saint-Michel Abbey.
The abbey features vertical granite construction with numerous gigantic staircases that lead you to the abbey church, a Romanesque-style nave with a bright gothic choir. Enjoy the quiet strolli through the monastic buildings, known as the Merveille ("wonder" in English). First the cloister, the fully-realized work of art of the abbey, with its fine columns and refined sculpted capitals and above all its breathtaking view overlooking the sea! Continue your discovery with the Chapter Room, the Refectory with its incredible stained-glass windows, the Guestroom and its huge fireplaces, and the Koom covered by amazing rib vaults and a succession of small chapels and crypts. And, just to make it even more amazing, there's the huge labyrinth!
Lunch at your leisure.
Visit of the historical museum.
After lunch, you will visit the Historical Museum with an audioguide. During this visit you will learn a lot about the Mont Saint Michel's secrets from the Middle Ages. There, you will discover the lugubrious dungeons and the jails of the Mont Saint Michel but also some wax statues and an old arms collection. The Middle Ages torture tools or the Louis XI iron cage will captivate you for sure.
Cider and Calvados tasting at "L'Auberge de la Mère Poulard".
"L'Auberge de la Mère Poulard" welcomes you with a great Bay view. You will enjoy a glass of calvados and a cider tasting : 3 glasses of artisanal ciders (brut, doux and rosé). During the tasting you will appreciate some "Mère Poulard" biscuits. Then you will have free time in the Auberge shop to purchase some souvenirs, calvados, ciders and biscuits.
